Denmark Residence Cards for British Citizens Expiring

Key Point

  • British citizens in Denmark with temporary residence under the Withdrawal Agreement must apply for permanent residence as their residence cards approach expiry

Permanent Residence U.K. Nationals

On 4 December 2025, Denmark confirmed that residence cards issued to British citizens following Brexit are nearing their five‑year expiry. First issued in 2020, these cards will soon lapse, and the agency advises eligible individuals to apply early for permanent residence to maintain continuous proof of status.

Eligibility for Permanent Residence:

  • British citizens who have lived legally in Denmark for at least five consecutive years.
  • Applicants must have met conditions for residence during this period (e.g., worker, self‑employed, student, person with sufficient funds or family member of a British citizen).

Application Process:

  • Eligible individuals are encouraged to apply now, even if their card does not expire for another year, to ensure continuous proof of residence.
  • Applications require booking an appointment at a SIRI branch office to record biometric features.
  • Applicants should select “Applying under the Danish Aliens Act” when booking.

Permanent Residence Cards:

  • Valid for 10 years once issued.
  • No action is required for those who already hold permanent residence.
